Agarwood, also known as Oud, Oodh, Oudh, Aloeswood, Gaharu, Eaglewood, or agar, is a dark resinous heartwood that forms (in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees) when they become infected with Phialophora parasitica. Prior to infection, the heartwood is relatively light and pale colored; however, as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark, aromatic resin in response to the attack, which results in a very dense, dark, resin embedded heartwood. It is valued in many cultures for it distinctive fragrance, and thus is used for incense and perfumes.
 
Medicinal Properties: Traditionally, it has been used for Ayurvedic practice and Traditional Chinese medicine (as well as Southeast Asian Countries, Bangladesh, and Tibet) for centuries to treat various diseases, particularly the inflammatory-associated diseases. It is known to help calm the nervous system for relaxation, relieves allergies, and has anti-oxidants, anti-cancerous, anti-diabetic, and anti-microbial properties. Agar is also a wonderful mosquito repellant!
 
Spiritual Properties: Agarwood stimulates the psyche by enhancing mental functions and awareness which is perfect for meditation. It calms the body and removes destructive and negative nergies. It's wonderful for reducing fear by invoking a feeling of vigor and harmony. Buddha stated that the fragrance of burning Agarwood is the authentic "scent of Nirvana." It is said that prayers rise with the scented smoke of Agarwood incense and carry the prayer to the Creator.
