An Orisha is a spirit that reflects one of the manifestations of God in Africa's Yoruba religion. Many Orishas have found their way throughout he Americas via the Atlantic slave trade and are now expressed in practices as varied as Santeria, Candomble, Trinidad Orisha, and Oyotunji.

Oshun is the Orisha of the fresh waters, the Orisha of the river that shares her same name. She brings prosperity and fertility to her worshippers. She especially watches over the poor and the sick as she is said to heal the sick with the power of the water. Oshun is also the Orisha of love. She is often represented as a beautiful young woman or a mermaid. With the African diaspora, Oshun was brought to the Americas and adopted into the Cuban, Brazilian, and Haitian religious belief systems.
